What is a Quantity Surveyor?

Quantity Surveyor (QS) is a construction cost specialist, distinct from a Land Surveyor who uses tripods for measurements. QS professionals typically hold degrees in construction economics, applied science, construction management, or engineering. They advise on costs and quantities throughout a project, from start to finish and even after.

In Australia, QSs often belong to the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and must pass an assessment for membership (MAIQS or FAIQS). Experienced QSs can achieve Certified Quantity Surveyor (CQS) status. At CPP we hold both MAIQS and CQS credentials.

QS services include creating Bills of Quantities, cost plans, estimates, advising on tendering, contracts, market conditions, budgeting assistance, monitoring construction costs, progress claim assessment, advising on budget changes, and preparing various reports for different purposes.

With their comprehensive skill set, Quantity Surveyors can also work in roles like cost planners, estimators, contract administrators, construction managers, project managers, and development managers.

Why should you engage a Quantity Surveyor?

In the complex and dynamic world of construction, the path to a successful project is fraught with potential financial pitfalls and budgetary blowouts. However, these risks can be significantly mitigated with one critical step: seeking expert cost advice before breaking ground. This article explores the indispensable role of professional cost consultancy in ensuring construction projects are financially viable, efficient, and aligned with investment objectives.

Foreseeing Financial Feasibility

The foundation of any construction project's success is its financial feasibility. Professional cost advisors employ sophisticated techniques to provide accurate cost estimates, allowing owners, architects, builders and other construction stakeholders to assess the viability of their projects from the outset. This early-stage financial foresight is crucial for securing funding, whether it's from banks requiring detailed quantity surveyor reports or owners seeking assurance of a project's probable cost.

Budget Management and Control

Cost advice goes beyond initial estimates; it is a continuous process that ensures a project remains on budget throughout its lifecycle. Through detailed cost planning and monitoring, quantity surveyors help navigate the inevitable challenges and changes that arise during construction. This proactive approach to budget management prevents minor issues from ballooning into costly setbacks, safeguarding the project's financial health.

Enhancing Investment Value

Expert cost advice is not just about keeping expenses within budget; it's also about maximising the return on investment. By identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising on quality—through value engineering and strategic procurement—quantity surveyors ensure that every dollar spent contributes to the project's overall value. This balance between cost efficiency and quality enhancement is pivotal in achieving a competitive edge in the market.

Risk Mitigation

Construction projects are inherently risky, with factors such as market volatility, material price fluctuations, and unforeseen site conditions posing significant financial risks. Quantity Surveyors play a crucial role in identifying, quantifying and managing these risks. Through comprehensive risk assessments and contingency planning, they provide a roadmap for navigating uncertainties, ensuring that the project is prepared for potential financial storms.
